Why Sustainability Matters
Sustainability and Highways:
In 2010, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) launched the Sustainable Pavements
Program to advance the knowledge and practice of sustainability as related to pavements. The program aims at increasing awareness, educating stakeholders and contributing to the body of knowledge in the intersection of sustainability and highway materials and construction.

Sustainable Transportation:
FHWA provides technical assistance to State, regional, and local transportation agencies to help our partners enhance sustainability, improve resilience, and reduce energy use and emissions on our highway system. These efforts improve project delivery, protect our highway system for the future, and reduce the cost of transportation.
